Predicting the future. Isn’t that mystic Meg stuff?
I don’t think so.
Last October I was at the Comptia EMEA Partner event in London listening to the future of how technology will transform our world in 20, 30, 40 years time from some well-informed and fascinating people.
It’s exciting as well as scary. Technology is one of the, if not THE, key disrupting and transformational processes that will shape how we live, work and play in the future. Just take SpaceX this week with re-useable, self-landing rockets appearing like images from a sci-fi-movie on our news screens.
Right now, as I’m experiencing it, we’re in the growing stages of convergence and integration of day to day products and services enhancing our lives and work spaces; the Internet Of Things – take as an example, the massive penetration of mobile devices into our lives, Amazon’s Alexa, the Google Assistant, Smart appliances and the massive growth in Apps to deliver value and experiences.
The automation industry is transforming collaborative workspaces and manufacturing production process to make it faster and safer especially as the health and safety concerns of working with robots is reduced.
As an IT/MSP there’s never been a better time to be in business and add value to clients. To help them understand the opportunities that IT and technology can provide for their business. If you’re just in break fix it’s likely your future is bleak – not just yet but…inevitable… like the dinosaurs; just like the potential risk to manual workers in many industries in the future.
If you want to avoid competing on price and feeling like a commodity you need to help your customers understand the value of technology and IT. You need to be in the business of adding value not just doing stuff when needed, until your relationship with your clients is one of partnership. Until they seek your advice and you willingly open their eyes to how technology can empower efficiency and profitability as well as protect their businesses will you remain an on-demand service competing on price and limited in scale by capacity .
Artificial Intelligence (AI), driverless vehicles, robotics, virtual reality, blockchain. All of these will disrupt and transform industries like we can never believe. Hospitality and travel will change beyond recognition. The insurance industry is petrified of driverless cars. The medical industry has robotic surgery looming, with AI agents for diagnosis and nano technology injectables that has the mind boggling. The legal and accounting industry could well be wiped out. And within education technology will allow remote and immersive experiences that test knowledge and the application of it real time. Transformational!
And to think, back in the day, we had white boards over blackboards and that was considered cool!
And it’s only going to speed up…
Now much these changes may not be widely distributed within the next 20 or 30 years but saying that some commentators are predicting crypto currencies could be replacing fiat currencies within 10 years on the back of blockchain technology.
What we’re all seeing is that technology is and has become integrated into our lives and it’s only going to deepen. The opportunity to help your customers therefore has never been greater but how are you doing that?
